Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this wine tasting class:

Nobody makes more wine than Italy. Not only is the quantity staggering, so is the breadth of styles, grapes, production methods, and more. Yet for this evening, the focus will be solely on Tuscany, one of the greatest, and surely most storied, of all Italian wine provinces. In addition to the many intriguing wines from this zone, we will also sample Italian cured hams and cheeses, some from Tuscany as well as others from beyond to add perspective.

When we offer courses on Italy, it is always difficult to decide which wines make the cut, with so many inimitable wines to consider. When we focus on Tuscany alone, however, it's a bit easier. We'll sample Sangiovese, the dominant grape in Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Carmignano, and many more. Included will be Super Tuscans, the non-conformist offerings made with everything from Cabernet to Merlot to Syrah and beyond. In addition, we'll sample a couple unique dry whites which, even if you favor reds, will likely impress. Finally, to make it interesting, some wines may be served blind, allowing you to decide, without knowing price nor pedigree, if they are worth adding to your cellar, or best left on the store shelf. We hope you'll join us.

As always, an array of breads, charcuterie, and artisan cheeses will be served!

This class is unbelievably overpriced. The space is very strange and smelled like old cigarettes. It wasn't inviting and seemed very make shift, like an old apartment. To pay $90 for a class when there are so many other classes in beautiful spaces for half the price, it's not worth it. One of the bottles of wine was corked and the instructor knew about it before serving it. It was disappointing to have no backup. Again, for such a pricey class, this should not have been an issue. This class is not really a salumi class. It is misadvertised. There is a little bit of salumi, served toward the end, but it is mostly cheese. The cheese was delicious though (and so is the bread they serve). Serving 2 wines at a time was great to be able to compare and contrast them.

This was a fun introduction to the wines of Tuscany. The teacher was incredibly knowledgable and capable of answering more questions. However, for ten different wines, five cheeses, a slice or two of salumi and bread were not enough food! Overall, I would recommend classes at this location and look forward to taking others soon!

Question from anonymous
Is this class in a restaurant? What's the atmosphere like?
Answer from Andrew H. Verified Educator
Classes are held at 330 West 11th Street, in a small carriage house we've designed specifically for wine classes and tastings. The environment is warm and inviting, and is closer in feel to a restaurant than it is to a traditional classroom.
