Idlewild Books was founded in 2008 by David Del Vecchio, a former United Nations press officer. The name Idlewild was taken from the original name for New York International Airport, which was renamed JFK in December 1963. We even have some stained glass and chairs from the original Idlewild Airport in our store!

Idlewild is an independent Manhattan bookstore specializing in travel and world literature and organized by country. We also host language classes (French, Spanish and Italian) and have a wide selection of books in French and Spanish.

Ranked "Best of New York" by New York Magazine, the school classes are taught in our beautiful bookstore, not a stuffy classroom. All our courses are taught by native speakers who know their culture and language inside and out, but have several years' teaching experience so they're are also familiar with the challenges typically faced by English speakers. You'll be surprised how much you'll learn in just eight weeks.

Idlewild carries a range of guidebooks to suit the needs and tastes of every traveler and budget. We believe that a novel, travelogue or history can be just as valuable a key to a place as any guidebook and our well read, well traveled staff is happy to make reading recommendations for any traveler, book lover, or gift giver.

The instructor of the class was very patient, friendly, and effective. Class = 5/5 When the class started, it was kind of large, but by the last class, it leveled off, making it more productive personally. On the schedule, there isn't a successive class to take in this same time slot afterwards. Overall, I would do another beginner/intermediate language class with this school.

This is a great class for people who want to have fun and learn casually. I basically grinned ear to ear for the full time I was there, which makes me a big school geek. The class is fun, and the instructor is compelling and thoughtful. He teaches a general use standpoint, rather than academic....clarifying when something is incorrect but people will understand, vs incorrect and native speakers will be confused. It is absolutely not an immersion structure. He explains things clearly in English, and then has you practice. ...I've tried an immersion Beginner French class and I was completely lost. To me, having English language discussion to clarify foundational concepts helped a lot; the tradeoff is you spend less time listening and speaking. (The instructor does strongly advocate to spend time listening to french outside of class). The only frustration is that everyone was coming in at a different level. Half of class felt like review, but the other half was stuff I never understood in my past French class, and was very eager to learn. I think this is inevitable in a beginner class, and probably evens out in the higher levels. I'm not sure how Idlewild's courses will track for folks looking to become fluent; I'm guessing to some extent it depends on the person. My plan is to work my whole way through Idlewild's course levels as a foundation, and then see where I'm at.

Kind and informative instructor. You learn a lot in each class so if you can practice during the week between classes then it is great!

This class was excellent. The instructor explained concepts clearly and made learning so much fun. Everything we learned was useful and easily applicable to everyday situations. In just seven weeks, I picked up more Spanish than expected. I am definitely taking the next course in the series.

The first session is wasted since there is no movie to discuss. You could send out an e-mail the weekend or the Monday before class begins with the name and source of the movie that is going to be discussed during the first class. If someone enrolls after the e-mail so goes out, you could follow up the acknowledgement of the registration with the same info. It would be helpful if the instructor did more correction of the participants spoken French and if she took that opportulnity to talk about interesting grammar or points of vocabulary when someone makes an error.
