Teacher was nice, but having taken classes before (both in and out of a university) I was disappointed as there wasn’t much technique taught to us at all. I felt the other students were missing out on what they could’ve learned, also could’ve done without the timed one-two minute drawings and just focused on one sketch. Could be very good with technique instructions.

Great instructor. Thanks for making class fun!

Had a few years of experience but hadn't used charcoal or sketched in over a decade.
That said, was a really nice course with a good pace and no pressure to slowly figure everything out again.
Instructor was friendly, informative, and provided constructive individual feedback.

I enjoyed the small class size and the range of activities (1 minute drawings, 2 minute drawings, 3 minute drawings, 5 minute drawings, and 1 hour drawing). I felt comfortable in the group as someone who just likes to draw for fun but does not have formal instruction in art.

Really enjoyed the class, the instructor was very supportive.

Lovely instructor who allow you to find the technique that works for YOU. Lots of time to practice and affirming feedback.

Encouraging instructor and lots of chances to explore which drawing technique works better for you personally (intuitive vs measured, or a combination). Lots of affirming feedback and gentle suggestions for improvements. I loved it! Super fun!

Short and sweet! Not going to hugely alter your style, but some great hints and a confidence boost. The teacher is super supportive!

This class is excellent for all levels. The instructor Elysa has a very gentle approach. If you are paying attention you will realize that she is providing a lot of information on drawing instruction. She is very encouraging... wherever you are in your drawing level. The anatomy portion of this class is coming from the subject matter (Michelangelo's figure drawings), not from naming the muscles. I feel the class should therefore be titled differently. Even so, you will get a lot of drawing practice, starting from shorter timed (gesture) drawings to the longest drawing. The space (Brooklyn Brainery) is clean and light-filled. All materials are provided. You really do not need to bring anything with you.

Our instructor was great. She gave us lot of great information on the history of the design, and also gave us great tips on how it should be done right. Just a fun time. Definitely recommended.

I've taken another introduction to charcoal class taught by the same teacher and they were both equally amazing. This class was slightly more challenging since it involved more anatomy and less figurative drawing. Even as a practicing artist, I leaned a lot and took away a lot from the class. This class, and teacher, come highly recommend. Even as a bigger or someone who's well versed in the arts, you'll never feel excluded and always leave with at least one amazing new piece.

My favorite part of the class was how completely relaxed and nonjudgmental it was. As we were all beginners, there was absolutely no sense of intimidation, which is what had worried me initially about the idea of taking classes. At the same time, I felt challenged and inspired.
I walked out with a drawing I'm quite proud of and I could not be more happy with the experience.

The teacher was talented and enthusiastic. She included a lot of useful information and hands-on drawing experience in a short time. I can't think how she could have been better. The space was clean and comfortable and everything was prepared for us when we arrived. Thank you for a good experience.

Elysa Lozano is a great teacher. She is very knowledgable and enthusiastic. She has great energy. She accommodates different styles and needs. Most importantly, in the Charcoal Drawing classes, she lets everyone explore freely with just the right amount of analysis. The Brainery is a great space.
