Class Description

Description

Thucydides' historical account of the Peloponnesian War narrates the catastrophic 27-year conflict between Athens and Sparta, a war that fundamentally transformed the ancient world. This devastating conflict brought an end to Athenian democracy and destroyed the traditional Spartan aristocratic system. The war also demolished the classical model of the independent city-state and its accompanying concepts of citizenship and civic participation. Through its combination of political speeches, historical narrative, and analytical reflection, Thucydides' History offers a compelling and critical examination of the decline and ultimate transformation of the classical culture we have inherited. What insights does this remarkable work offer regarding the internal contradictions that prevented this civilization from sustaining itself across generations?

In this course, students will engage with the complete text of Thucydides' History, paying special attention to its complex oscillation between claims of historical objectivity and passages of intense subjective emotional power. We will carefully examine Thucydides' speeches, in which historical figures including Pericles, Alcibiades, and Nicias debate fundamental questions of political philosophy and practical statecraft: the nature of democratic freedom and its necessary limits, the proper response to wrongdoing through punishment and retaliation, the tension between pragmatic advantage and justice, and the contradictions inherent in imperial rule within a democratic system. We will also engage with the work's profound emotional intensity and pathos, analyzing how its distinctive style and structural organization amplify the account of prolonged human suffering and loss. Finally, we will explore Thucydides' intellectual context, which includes Athenian dramatic tragedy and comedy, sophistic philosophy, and the emerging forms of Socratic dialogue and philosophical method.
