Class Description

Description

Publication in the New York Times remains the gold standard for personal essay writers, offering both prestigious recognition and significant career opportunities, including book publishing contracts. In this intensive workshop, acclaimed author Brett Paesel (Modern Love columnist) shares proven strategies for crafting and placing essays in this highly competitive venue. Through engaging classroom exercises, expert instruction on essay craft, and personalized feedback on your work, you will learn Brett's proprietary techniques for understanding what editors seek, navigating the often-unspoken format expectations, and positioning your work for success.

By class conclusion, you will have completed a polished, submission-ready essay informed by NY Times standards and receive a strategic guide for where to submit your work. The goal is to prepare you to submit your essay for publication within weeks of completing the class. Writing Pad's track record speaks to the program's effectiveness: of 350 Writing Pad alumni who have sold essays and articles, 44 have been published in the New York Times, demonstrating the real-world value of these techniques and the focused instruction you will receive.
