Class Description

Description

By day, the World War II Memorial presents itself as a sprawling expanse of concrete and stone, bustling with thousands of visitors from around the world. However, when darkness falls and twilight descends, this iconic landmark transforms into an enchanting nocturnal landscape, perfectly suited for nighttime photography enthusiasts. Designed by renowned architect Friedrich St. Florian and officially opened in 1994, the memorial comes alive after sunset as illumination highlights the fountains and the massive Atlantic and Pacific towers that flank the site.

To the east, the luminous Washington Monument rises majestically above the dancing white fountains, its stark white surface contrasting beautifully against the deep blue twilight sky. To the west, the golden facade of the Lincoln Memorial is reflected in the still waters of the Reflecting Pool, framing the pure white statue of Lincoln within, creating composition opportunities that photographers dream about capturing.

Along both sides of the memorial, intricate bas-relief sculptures depict dramatic scenes from the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of World War II. These sculptural details create particularly striking images when rendered in monochrome, offering photographers endless creative possibilities.

This night photography workshop is led by architectural photographer and Washington Photo Safari director E. David Luria, who will teach you the essential techniques for capturing stunning images in low-light conditions. You'll learn how to photograph using Manual Mode without flash, master long-exposure photography, understand proper composition principles, and achieve excellent exposure and accurate white balance using your camera's built-in color filtration options and white balance menu selections.

Equipment Requirements and Recommendations:

  • Camera (any type will work)
  • Multiple lenses for versatility
  • Extra memory cards to accommodate extended shooting
  • An extra fully charged battery
  • Accessories such as filters and a remote release shutter
  • Flashlight for navigating the grounds safely
  • Clothing appropriate for evening weather conditions

Note: You must have a sturdy, good-quality tripod, as this is essential for the long-exposure photography techniques you will be learning. The photo safari begins a few minutes before sunset and concludes approximately two hours later, allowing you to capture the most dramatic lighting transitions.
