Youth Camp - Bubble Up: Intro to Glassblowing

Often times our artistic visions are loftier than our ability to produce them. This is especially true with a difficult process like glassblowing. By breaking down large complex sculptures into simpler, more manageable parts and assembling them cold, artists are able to fulfill their vision without having to compromise because of their skill level. In this week-long camp students will use this strategy to design and execute one large, ambitious sculpture. Students will begin by working in teams as they help each other blow or sculpt parts in the glassblowing studio. The class will then move on to the coldworking studio where students will cut, grind, and assemble their unique constructions.

Preparation for Classes

Students should bring notebooks to each class for sketching steps to techniques, recording inspiration, and planning class projects. Students wishing to use specific tools or materials not supplied in class are responsible for obtaining these items themselves.

Proper Studio Attire

For your safety, protective eyewear must be worn at all times in all areas of the UrbanGlass Studio. We will provide appropriate eyewear for your use. Appropriate work clothes are also required. Flammable or synthetic fabrics, sandals and open-toe shoes are not allowed. Long hair should be tied back.
