This mandatory 8-hour refresher course is required for all construction industry employees in New York City under NYC Department of Buildings regulations. It must be completed every four years following the initial 32-hour course. NYC established this training requirement following OSHA fatality reports and workplace fatalities and injuries documented in the city. Local Law 52 specifically requires refresher training for experienced workers who erect, dismantle, modify, or repair supported scaffolds exceeding 40 feet in height.
The course helps participants understand that scaffold use is fundamental to worker safety and addresses common hazards, including fall protection, struck-by incidents, electrocution, and structural collapse. Training covers the safe and proper installation, removal, and modification of scaffolding systems. Upon successful completion, students receive a photo identification card valid for four years.
