Class Description

Description

Ours is a country of immigrants, united in the search for something better but uniquely formed by the culture and history from which we originated. Exiles and entrepreneurs, sojourners and refugees, immigrants straddle worlds old and new.

In this six-week workshop for fiction and memoir writers, we will explore different approaches to writing the immigrant experience. What lens do we bring to bear on life-altering events? How do we write about displacement, alienation, memory, and identity? We will look to some of the best contemporary immigrant writers for guidance, reading the work of authors such as Viet Thanh Nguyen, Jenny Zhang, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Akhil Sharma, and Achy Obejas and using their techniques in weekly writing exercises. This course is open to writers who are new to The Writers Studio as well as current and former students.
