Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this arduino class:

The Beginner Microcontrollers workshop provides a robust 5-session introduction to using microcontrollers, including hands-on projects, the principles behind how they work and applications of use.

This workshop covers beginner-level microcontrollers, circuitry and programming, providing a starting point for anyone looking to build their skills in this exciting field of engineering. Through a series of Arduino microcontroller programming and sensor manipulation projects, participants develop the skills and understanding that form the basis of this field.

Takeaways:
  • Understand capabilities and applications of microcontrollers
  • Utilize microcontroller interface
  • Learn about voltage, current and resistance using Ohm’s Law
  • Visual understanding of the hardware structure of Arduino UNO
  • Understand Arduino UNO programming GUI (Graphical User Interface)
  • Analyze and troubleshoot circuits using Ohm’s Law to calculate specs
  • Read PCB schematics and build circuits on breadboards
  • Use #define programming C component
  • Understanding fundamental properties of a series circuit
  • Visually determine characteristics of resistors
  • Use Arduino UNO to gauge operational range of Photo-Resistors
  • Use Arduino UNO to read analog signals to control RGB LEDs digitally
Who should take this workshop: Anyone who is interested in this field and wants to learn how to use microcontrollers.

Career applications for this workshop: This workshop develops the fundamental skills to get started using microcontrollers in robotics, electronics design, sensor control and IoT (Internet of Things, the interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects).

Workshop Microcontrollers Kit: The Lights Kit is used for classwork and homework and is available for purchase. Kits are also available on loan during workshops and office hours for no charge, but can't be taken home.

Laptop Requirements: Participants use their personal laptop, with no system requirements to run Arduino software.

Yesterday I took the Intro Microcontrollers workshop with Mohammed Zen Akram, at the Duro Workforce sunny, spacious, modern facilities. I have a technical background but the other students had none. They were lawyers, artists, marketing professionals. Mohammed, masterfully brought all of us at the technical level required to build simple electronic circuits and control them with the computer software via Arduino Board! After the workshop, Mohammed and Gabriel Foreman, Duro Workforce president spent more than hour answering students' what if questions and guiding our future technical education! Wonderful class!

Duro has been a great learning experience where I have met people with different interests in technology. I had never worked with hardware like an Arduino board before but in a few weeks I felt familiarized. Overall it’s been an exciting way to learn and a good way to meet people with different interests than mine who want to use technology to make the world better.

The Beginner Microcontrollers: Controlling Lights 5 week workshop was an amazing introduction to a field that I’ve been wanting to investigate, but couldn’t get into on my own. Mohammed is an extremely knowledgeable - and patient - instructor. He’s able to explain complicated concepts in familiar terms, and structures the lesson plans to be both digestible and dynamic. The classes follow classic pedagogical structures with material being introduced via relatable metaphors and back and forth dialog, the introduction of more sophisticated information over the course of the workshop, homework that reinforces the primary lessons of a class, office hours to confer and problem solve, and reviews at the beginning of each class. As an artist and professor, I’ve spent a lot of time in maker spaces, and gotten most of my tech chops from that environment and through online tutorials. What sets this workshop apart is not just the combination of hands-on learning and personal attention, but also Mohammed’s extensive background as an electrical engineer, who’s able to teach not just the how, but also the why.
